Bud’s Birdhouses

Bud’s birdhouses make great decorations in the house, but don’t be dismayed, they are built to use outside as well to attract your transient avian population.

We are less than two weeks out from the Whimsy County Frog Festival and Show of Classic Conveyances, and though we are still looking for more vendors and classic vehicles for the event to benefit Black Forest Fire victims, we want to let folks know what they are guaranteed to expect.

For certain, we will disrupt our shop for this one day, Sept 7, to set up temporary shop in front of Pikes Peak Brewing Company at Woodmoor Village. Being a little mom and pop shop, we just don’t have the ability to keep the store open while operating our booth and the festival at the same time. But you can be confident, if you make the mile or so run across the interstate, you won’t be disappointed with the goings on there.

Besides the live music from multiple bands and performers, the classic vehicles competing for Best in Show, or all the games and prizes, we will set up shop with more than 10 other crafters, vendors and artisans to kick off the fall season.

From now until Sept 7, we are going to highlight some of the vendors you can expect to see at the Whimsy County Frog Festival and Show of Classic Conveyances. Today, we want to introduce one of our regular vendors and Monument local, Mr. Harry “Bud” Smoot of Bud’s Birdhouses.

For the past 30 years, Bud has operated his own business as a graphic designer producing tradeshow displays and exhibits. Now, he builds birdhouses one at a time, just for fun.

“I like the creative process, and the idea that I do not know just what the finished product is going to look like. I keep adding items, i.e. door knobs, hinges,  bolts, keys, hooks etc. until I think it looks finished,” Bud said.

While many of the designs are similar, no two are exactly alike, and that keeps them unique and exciting and like nothing you can find anywhere else.

Bud has researched the many types of birds found in Colorado, and designed the correct size entry for each birdhouse. Also, contrary to popular belief, birds do not like bright colors, so he uses muted colors and old weathered wood for his birdhouses.

Visit Bud and see his birdhouses at the Whimsy County Frog Festival and Show of Classic Conveyances Sept 7, 1-6 pm in the parking lot of Pikes Peak Brewing Company, 1756 Lake Woodmoor Dr.
